GIPHY Capture. The GIF Maker App Reviews

No idea how to access files

I agree with some other reviews on this site. Why is there no documentation for how to use this? I can capture a gif alright, but then there’s no way to find it asides of inside their viewer. Capturing my screen is pretty useless if I don’t have access to the file to share it :/

No non-sense app

This app is legit. It works perfectly for simple screen grabs. Hotkeys are awesome. Review tools are great. Auto upload to gyfcat.com is a HUGE time saver, although I’d love to be able to choose from a few different providers. The icon on the toolbar is a little… different… and I think a little re-branding could help a bunch. But those are just nitpicks- the core product is rock solid and worth a look.

A True Apple-styled no-fuss GIF maker

Extremely easy to use, the only thing missing is more settings (e.g., FPS/quality control).

I’m Unable to Sign into my Facebook Account Thru Giphy Capture

I open the app, click to sign into my facebook, and it starts to open the sign in page (in an external window) and then it quickly dissapears before I can do anything with said sign in window. Any suggestions? Does this version need a fix?

Easy … Once you figure it out.

A paragraph of instruction would have been nice. Once you figure it out it’s a breeze. I was NOT forced to upload anything to GIPHY or join their site. I was able to save it anywhere on my computer I wanted to. *** Your video will play behind the APP window. You simply start and stop the recording where you want. Don’t worry you can fine tune it in the EDIT mode. This is a very good FREE App.

Love it but..

I love it, the interface, etc. It’s faster to make a gif w/ this app than photoshop but would just make 2 improvements: 1) the small size is still too big to upload to tumblr as they have a 2MB limit - cut out some frames for a web gif ‘smallest’ version 2) tapping the record button twice is hard because generally i want to capture the first frames of the video and miss it cuz i’m fussing with that button. great work tho! excited to use!

I miss the old GifGrabber

I don’t know when GifGrabber changed to this bs, but I liked it a lot more before. Some new features are cool, like pingpong, but I wish you could see the size of the .gif before saving again.

Simple and fun enough for a child to use

I used to manually edit gif files (tedious!) to add the reverse half of the loop to eliminate the typical jerky movement.. GIPHY does that automatically when you select “Ping-Pong” mode. And nothing could be easier than positioning and sizing a translucent window to fit over a video or part of a video to create a .gif file. Editing is super simple with slider controls to select the exact the loop you want. Also, you CAN edit the file in Preview and remove frames or reduce picture size / resolution to reduce the overall file size. My original file was 3.8 MB. I deleted every other frame in Preview and it reduced the gif file to 1.8 MB. You can also edit the color of each frame, providing the opportunity for some fun effects. (You might run into trouble if you delete the first and last photo in the set.) I can’t believe this program is free.

GifGrabber was better

I wish I’d had any control over this update, which steathily happened unbeknownst to me overnight. GifGrabber wasn’t a pretty app by any means, but it did what it did relatively well. As others have said here, some of the new features (like caption, pingpong) are nice for those who want them, but there are some glaring problems here: 1. The UI obstructs any and all player interfaces, so you have to start playback early and then manuever the window over it every time and just hope you get the positioning right and in time. 2. You no longer have any idea what the size of the file will be, so good luck with all of that trial and error if you want to compress GIFs for Tumblr (which has a 2MB limit). GifGrabber told us exactly what the size would be without actually saving the file, so while it wasn’t perfect, it was reliable. Also, being able to adjust frames by number was nice when you knew that changing by a single integer or two would shave off the file weight accordingly. Now it’s dumbed down to such an extent that it’s only really useful for making GIFs for, well, GIPHY. A coup for them? I miss the old app and wish the developer would allow us to revert to a legacy version...

Best gif capturer in the market so far

I was looking for a right tool to capture my game development and find this really useful, it is still lacking few options (FPS, quality editing, etc.) but I think it deserves a 5 star if those options will be available in the future too.

Giphy Update Is AMAZING

Really excited to see this app get an overhaul from giffgrabber. The look and feel of this app is really solid, beautiful and elegant. Thanks!

Worse than Gifgrabber.

If you’re coming here looking to upgrade from Gifgrabber, don’t. As “sleek” as this interface looks, it’s significantly worse than Gifgrabber. There’s no longer the option to grab gifs in high def quality (which would’ve been great to know before upgrading to this) and the interface is significantly annoying considering it now has extra space it’s taking up for no reason. A complete over-sight in understanding what users want. You can no longer minimize the capture screen and hit the hotkey in order to start capturing, you now have to hit the hotkey twice if it’s minimized (once to bring the screen back up, and again to start recording) which just doesn’t make sense. Compared to the previous incarnation of Gifgrabber, this is multiple steps back in function and performance. On top of that, the speed at which gifs upload to GIPHY is incredibly slow compared to the uploading time to gfycat from gifgrabber. I wish I could go back. Hard to believe that the creator would choose to remove the ability to create high quality gifs, but they did.

I know everyone is “but my GifGrabber!” but I have a suggestion

Can you give us a hotkey to place giphy capture window over the top of whatever we are looking at? How about a check mark in preferences for “always on top”? I will come back and update my review when you guys have that sorted, because I can work around everything else. Also the ability to log into Giphy using our Gfycat and Imgur accounts instead of asking for a Facebook login which didnt even work when I clicked it to see what kind of info you guys would be mining there.

Buggy, laggy - LICECAP is better

I had high hopes for Giphy Capture - it looks great, but just lags and makes easy things painful. Going back to LICECAP - free, basic, but does the job.

Useful…But not so much

This app is a “replacement” for GIFGrabber. One day, suddenly and without warning, my GIFGrabber app was gone from my iMac. I searched and searched but it was no longer there. When I finally gave up on trying to figure out what happened to it, I went to reinstall GIFGrabber which I used very often, and I found this GIPHY CAPTURE was its replacement and GIFGrabber was no longer available…So I tried GIPHY CAPTURE. In some respects it’s quite similar to GIFGrabber…but it’s just plain not as good. For one thing, when you decide to save a GIF that you’ve made with this GIPHY CAPTURE, while it does give you three size options like GIFGrabber did, now it does NOT tell you the file size (e.g. 2MB) of each option. That’s a significant and annoying inconvenience IMO even thoough I can find out the size after the fact (when its already saved) using other software. IF it isn’t a size I need or prefer for my purposes I have to remake the gif, with still more guesswork. Another shortfall of this newer version is that the frame-sizer that’s used to set the outer perimeter of the GIF you’re creating has certain inexplicable dexterity limitations and so frequently, I’m unable to accurately frame the GIF and I have to resort to cropping it using other software after it’s made and saved to my computer. I suppose even with these significant limitations, I’m going to rely on GIPHY CAPTURE for the meanwhile. But, it baffles me that a replacement that isn’t optional because it steathly deletes the existing software, would be an inferior product that can’t possibly measure up to the original product. Someone wasn’t using their head for anything more than a hatrack in this enterprise. I guess I’ll just hope that one of these days, GIPHY CAPTURE will disappear from my computer the way GIFGrabber did and a new…shiny, sparkly…new version will be available that will just be the good, old GIFGrabber…again.

Love It!

Does what it’s supposed to do. What more can you say. I see a perfect app for gif capturing!

GIPHY GRIEF

GIPHY is a nice upgrade in regards to the positioning of a start and stop point when creating a gif. It beats having to increase/decrease the number of frames to find/edit what you’re trying to create. However, my true gripe is in trying to determine the file size; this is where GifGrabber was superior. It’s absurd that a 3 second gif still exceeds the 2MB max TUMBLR allows for uploads. At least with GifGrabber you could get a longer gif and still have it within the allowed size. Longer gifs also tend to look better. The next update should include the file size as well as the ability to choose between HD and standard capturing (another gem feature of GifGrabber). I use(d) GifGrabber for TUMBLR more than any other site and if GIPHY can meld together its attributes with those of its own, then this would be a 10 star app hands down.

I’m so grateful for this app

Thank You for such an easy GIF app, can’t believe it’s free! I would have paid for this application.. D Would it be possible to allow the Giphy screen to record the Dock and Menu Bar? Again I would have paid for this every one is crazy over there. Thanks again!

about new update

i dont know why but with this new update when i upload a gif to tumblr it doesnt move!! i want the old virsion of this :/

Marketing ploy disguised as an app.

This was not an update, this was a cynical bait and switch scam. This is a marketing ploy disguised as an app. The important abilities to add/delete individual frames and to see the file size before saving have been removed. An example of why these features are important: tumblr allows a 2 meg maximum file size for gifs. Gifgrabber allowed users to edit the gif until it fit within the 2 meg confines before saving. The saved gifs look awful, with loss of detail and color. More time was spent making this look like the Giphy site (which is tacky and obnoxious) than making it a functional and useful app. DO NOT “update” i.e., replace your beloved Gifgrabber with this marketing scheme! It’s only good for newbs or for those wanting to make an occasional gif. I personally have made 1000’s of gifs and have a large following on tumblr. P.S. I’m sure Giphy is working on a “pro” version of this software, which won’t be free. They knew this would cause an outage with gif makers.
